Humanity Of Science

With the profound advancements of science, we have an amazing tool to assist us in articulating an understanding of the inner workings of the Universe. However, it is when we step out of integrity with science as a power tool that we raise it up to Golden Calf status and use it in the name of righteousness. Without humility and humanity, science can become an assault weapon. Take, for example, the atomic bomb. The scientist who figured out how to split the atom did so out of curiosity. It was never a conscious intention to use the discovery for inhumane purposes.

In our humility and our humanity, we never lose sight of the fact that the contribution of science is to discover, articulate, and expand on what has already been created. There is a joke about a scientist having a conversation with God (which is kind of funny in and of itself), claiming how he could create a man, just as God had created man. God enthusiastically, in His all-knowing and all-loving way, gave His blessing and encouraged the scientist to have a go at it. As the scientist reached, with cupped hands, to the ground, God inquired as to what he was doing. When the scientist explained he was picking up dirt, the key ingredient in the recipe for making man, God laughed. “Nice try. Make your own dirt.”

Through research, discovery, and the assembling of facts, science has developed a language for helping us wrap our minds around the great mysteries of our tangible world and the infinite Universe. Science, however, by its own design, is not the Truth. For the Truth, being Truth, does not require defining to be true. If science were the Truth, it would not redefine itself every ten years or so with each series of advancements. Inspired by curiosity, the beauty of science is its hunger for understanding, its commitment to exploring the unknown, and its ability to master the articulation of the findings. And in doing so, it provides us the opportunity to feel more connected and validated with our part in the big picture. At its essence, science is man’s attempt to understand and articulate the ineffable. Science, then, is a work in progress: an always-evolving process with infinite potential. Our humility and our humanity are key components in the advancements of science as a power tool.
