The View From Space Mountain

Growing up in Southern CA, frequent trips to Disneyland were a way of life. As teenagers my friends and I studied the layout of each Land and learned to navigate the Disney formula to our advantage. During the summer months, the Main Street Electrical Parade was a big draw and a crowed pleaser. Two times a night, thousands of guests would line Main Street to catch their favorite Disney characters dancing among floats with millions of twinkling colored lights.

For us, however, the Mian Street Electrical Parade meant there would be a minimal number of people in line queuing up to ride Space Mountain. On a good night we could get four runs on The Mountain during one run of The Parade.

Don’t get me wrong, as a small kid, I loved the magic of The Main Street Electrical Parade. But, as a teenager, it was hard to resist the call of multiple rides through Space Mountain.

I use this reference with my clients as a metaphor for looking for the golden opportunities during times of chaos. When the masses are focused on the Main Street Electrical Parade of gloom and doom; there are far fewer people queuing up for the Space Mountain of golden possibilities. We can still see the parade, however, the view from the top of the mountain gives us a bigger picture perspective with a broader range of possibility from which to choose.

So, during times of uncertainty and chaos, for a broader perspective, you can find me on the Space Mountain of possibility.
