Won’t You Take Me To Funky Town

Wow. I’m settling in at the Whittier Cafe to do some writing, and the song Won’t You Take Me To Funky Town started playing over the sound system. Every muscle in my body began to ache from the cellular memory of college dance classes with Lee Jones. Funky Town was his staple warmup song.

He was a quiet creative warrior who pushed us to our physical and emotional limits, and, introduced us to our soul expression through music and dance. I cannot remember his voice yet I remember vividly his black jazz pants and eye liner. I can recall him speaking to me directly only a half-dozen times, but his words and way of being made a profound contribution to my creative development as a director, the details of which would be revealed to me throughout my professional life, each time I would find myself looking for inspiration and say to myself, “How would Lee Jones stage this moment?”

We never know when or how we will be inspired and who we will be inspired by. Our part is to show up in each moment willing to be inspired.

Gotta make a move to a town that’s right for me. Town to keep me movin’, keep me groovin’ with some energy Won’t you let me take you to Funky Town.
